Air and ocean freight charges are based on either the weight or volume of goods. To determine the appropriate basis, the following comparisons must be performed.
Airfreight
International Airfreight
Chargeable weight is based on the greater of the actual weight in kilograms or dimensional weight (as calculated below)
- If measured in centimeters: L x W x H /366
- If measured in inches: L x W x H /166
Domestic Airfreight
Chargeable weight is based on the greater of the actual weight in pounds or dimensional weight (L x W x H (in inches)/194)
Ocean Freight
Chargeable weight is based on the greater of actual weight in metric tons (kilograms/1,000) or dimensional weight (in cubic meters). Only applies to break bulk (or less than container load) ocean freight.
To determine dimensional weight, first determine cubic feet and then convert to cubic meters (as indicated below):
- L x W x H (in inches)/1728 = cubic feet
- Cubic feet x .02832 = cubic meters
